LATVIA 100 YEARS ROPPONGI
Latvia Christmas Pavilion — Roppongi Hills Arena, Tokyo
The project creates a temporary Christmas pavilion for Latvia inside the Roppongi Hills café and public arena. Through the use of birch-plywood modular furniture, decorative tree structures, and printed graphic elements, the design transforms the interior and street-facing façade into an immersive winter landscape that communicates Latvian cultural identity.
Client: Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA)
Architect: Studio Wasabi Architecture
Location: Hills Café / Space | Roppongi Hills Arena, Minato City, Tokyo
1. Modular Tables
Two plywood table types were developed using rectangular tops and interlocking legs connected with structural fixing plates.
Table 1:
Top: 1830 × 763 mm
Legs: 798 × 250 × 21 mm
Table 2:
Top: 1830 × 763 mm
Taller legs measuring 1104 mm, suitable for counter-height use
Both tables serve as work, display and support surfaces throughout the pavilion.
Shelf Unit
A vertical shelving module composed of plywood side panels, solid-wood bars and shelves in various lengths. The cylindrical bars reinforce the structure while supporting the different shelf levels. The system is suitable for exhibition and product display.
Pavilion Structure
A lightweight spatial frame built from plywood columns, wall panels and horizontal top elements. The structure defines a recognizable interior zone within the café while maintaining openness and visual continuity.
It includes:
Tall primary columns
Narrow secondary columns
A back wall serving as an exhibition surface
Upper horizontal components acting as a light canopy
Decorative Trees
Three families of sculptural plywood trees form the visual identity of the pavilion.
Tree Type 1: tall contour panels supported by peg-based legs
Tree Type 2: narrower silhouettes with pronounced curves
Tree Type 3: a volumetric tree assembled from two intersecting panels
They appear both free-standing and integrated into vertical elements.
Café Interior Layout
The interior layout organizes the space into functional zones:
Seating and table areas
Cash desk
Display tables
Decorative tree clusters
Fitting room
Clothing stand area
Projection screen zone
The arrangement creates fluid circulation with curated visual anchors.
Street-Facing Façade
Tree silhouettes printed on transparent film are applied to the glass façade, creating a winter landscape visible from outside. A large-format table (1500 × 4000 mm) supports Latvian cultural displays.
Graphic Columns
Selected columns are wrapped with printed graphics representing stylized forests, visually reinforcing the pavilion’s thematic identity.
Christmas Tree Platform
A stepped circular platform made of three ascending levels with plywood tops and internal ribs. It supports a natural fir tree and acts as a central feature of the installation.
Arena Layout
The exterior arena includes booths, tall tables, food trucks and clusters of free-standing trees, creating a flexible environment for public events and seasonal activities.
